Excel. At the focus of every
new business trend.
Excel was founded in 1988
to provide information technology consultancy in
Hong Kong. In 1996, we established the Excel Software
Centre to develop business application packages
principally targeting the banking and finance sector.
Our Software Centre is the cradle of new product
development and training ground for our business
experts, and has developed a set of reusable multi-channel
(for internet, Mobile Phone and PDA) software components,
which can speed up application development with
high quality standard.
Our
twin focus on services and software reflects our
understanding of market needs and trends in the
information technology industry. Excellently
positioned as a premium e-solutions provider in
the Asia Pacific region, Excel is ready to capitalize
on the opportunities arising from a combination
of regional banking reforms, extensive experience
with
multinational clients, e-Commerce model seeking
for technology, rising trend of information technology
outsourcing and proven business application packages
built on open system platform.
Excel has close business
relationships with top global technology companies
such as Sun Microsystems, HP, Microsoft, Oracle,
Sybase, Lotus, EDS, Cisco, Kodak and IBM, and we
are well supported by several major strategic investors.
These include the Cheung Kong (Holdings), a leading
Hong Kong conglomerate, the United Overseas Bank,
a major Singaporean financial institution, and ChinaVest
Limited, a leading US venture capital firm specialising
in cross-Pacific technology investment.
In
March 2000, Excel formed a joint venture, i21
Limited ("i21"), with iBusiness Corporation
Limited ("iBusiness"), itself a joint
venture between Cheung Kong (Holdings), HSBC,
Hutchison Whampoa, and Hang Seng Bank. i21 offers
premier Application Service Provider (ASP) solutions
to business corporations, thus linking Excel's
strong product development and technological expertise
with the established marketing, trusted branding,
customer reach and network base of iBusiness.
In August 2001, iBusiness Corporation Limited
("iBusiness") also became a shareholder
of Excel.

Managed by a team of highly
capable technical and management staff, our Software Center
is set out to develop client/server and 3-tier computer
software packages and custom application development using
the most advanced hardware and the latest software tools.
The Software Center is equipped with various kinds of
development environment including UNIX servers, Windows
NT servers, and Notes servers. Developers are given powerful
PCs and state-of-the-art development tools such as Java,
Visual Basic, Delphi, JBuilder, PowerBuilder, Developer
2000, Oracle 8, SQLServer, and Sybase Systems 11. Our
Software Center takes on testing for software companies
such as Lotus, Microsoft, Oracle, and Sybase on the new
releases of their products.
Stringent development standards and
guidelines are established to ensure high quality output.
Quality assurance procedures are in place to provide
quality checkpoints in the various milestones of the
development cycles.
All developers participate in the
analysis and design of the applications so that the
whole team understands the business requirements before
starting the design and construction of the system.
The developers are paired and jointly responsible for
a defined unit of work, the purpose of which is to provide
peer review and quality assurance of each other. Code
reviews are conducted by the Software Center Managers
prior into system testing to ensure code consistency
and style. All systems deliverables are professionally
written by documentation analysts.
One key approach of the development
methodology in the Software Center is the use of "software
infrastructure", or "reusable objects"
(the same piece of software program which could be used
in different applications). An infrastructure team responsible
for developing reusable objects is established. The
reusable objects can help to speed up the development
process significantly if they are deployed under the
appropriate 'framework' (which is a set of clearly defined
business logic).
